Wellpoint to protect breast cancer patients with new provision

Wellpoint came under criticism last month following a damaging Reuters article, but it looks like the insurer is keeping women's health in mind at the moment.

According to a more recent article by the news source, the health plan company that falls under Blue Cross Blue Shield will now offer women recovering from a mastectomy a voluntary 48-hour hospital stay.

The move comes after U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro's attempt to introduce the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act. She is also lobbying to include more transparent benefit language.

Overall, DeLauro is happy with Wellpoint's decision, reiterating that women will now "have the freedom to discuss their treatment options with their physician without worrying about being discharged from the hospital before they are ready," according to the news source.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that the average stay for those who have a mastectomy is between one and two days. Experts are still evaluating if these statistics have any impact on a patient's overall health and recovery.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19809136-ADNFCR
