Connecticut ranked second highest in breast cancer diagnosis in the country

With breast cancer awareness month is in full swing, women of Connecticut should take this opportunity to get mammograms as the state was recently named the second highest incidence of Breast Cancer in the nation, NBC Connecticut reports.

Found in The 2011 Community Profile of Breast Cancer in Connecticut, researchers calculated that the state as a whole ranks 35 for breast cancer mortality rate, though 84 percent of women over 40 had a mammogram in the past two years - in comparison to 76 percent of women nationwide.

The report highlights towns with the highest rates including East Haven, Newtown, Glastonbury and Greenwich. Cities and towns with the highest mortality rate included Bloomfield, Branford, Cheshire and New Haven. Areas with high-late stage rates include Danbury, Enfield, Hartford and New Britain.

From the information, researchers also found that African American women and Hispanic women in urban or manufacturing areas in Connecticut were the least likely to get regular mammography screenings.

ABC News reports that Marin County, California, has the highest level of breast cancer in the nation. Northern California Cancer Center epidemiologist Tina Clarke reports diagnoses in this county tend to be on average 40 percent higher than the national average.
