AASU Pirates turn pink for breast cancer

It's not every day you see pirates decked out in pink regalia.

But when the men's and women's basketball teams at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia, took to the court last Wednesday, the AASU Pirates and their fans wore nothing but pink for their Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Zone games.

As part of the event, the school's athletic department sold t-shirts to benefit the Kay Yow Woman's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) breast cancer awareness fund, the Inkwell reports.

But the spirit of charity was not limited to a single game. Members of the women's team traveled to local breast cancer treatment centers throughout the month of February, to keep patients company as they worked through their chemotherapy routines.

The event was of particular interest to AASU sophomore golfer Victoria Bennett, whose mother was recently diagnosed with the disease.

"[My mom] is the strongest person I know, and if she can overcome something like that I can do anything I set my mind to," Bennett told the news source.

She added, "I think it's great what AASU is doing by making everyone aware of breast cancer and raising money for the cause."

The WBCA breast cancer fund has been operating since 2007, in consultation with the V Foundation.
